Cruise - Nov 1 Thessaloniki

Today we visited a church in Thessaloniki that is led by an American pastor named Mike Long. The church has a ministry to the refugees. Right now, they are working with 2 mothers that have 12 children between them. The fathers are in Germany trying to arrange for the rest of their families to join them. The church also operates a prayer room and helps refugees by providing a place where they can make jewelry. Mile led us on a walking tour of Thessaloniki and showed us some of the ancient ruins. There were some Roman ruins consisting of a forum and market that date back to Paul’s day.

The Rotunda. As with many old buildings in Greece, this started as a temple to some god or goddess, was converted to a church and then became a mosque.

The White Tower. This was a defense structure and a prison amongst other uses. It was also known as the Blood Tower as it served as a place of execution for long-term convicts. It was renamed the White Tower when a convict whitewashed it in exchange for his freedom. Today it is a museum.
